Feminist Filmmaking Within Communities

in December 2013 became a Sponsored Project of the SCAC.

Ariel Dougherty, through this book, invesitages 24 contemporary girl-centered film teaching programs. In telling these programs' stories, Ariel places them in the historical continuum of community-based film teaching workshops of the 1960s and 1970s, especially the feminist media teaching programs of Women Make Movies, Woman's Building and Women's Interarts Center. From this examination and historical review Ariel builds on feminist film theory and highlights the necessity of crafting and enacting feminist public media policies. The book maps how the critical tool of a camera in the hands of girls can transform society.

Ariel has over 40 years experience teaching filmmaking, mentoring youth & women filmmakers and advocating for feminist & community media making.

A component of the project is an experiential learning laboratory
in which Ariel will present early girl and women-made films from the 1960s & 1970s as well as works from today via the
WOMEN’S SILVERSCREEN ROADSHOW.
